The site is nearly up again and completly refurbished. I still need to put some music up, but it’s pretty much good to go. I’ll be posting blogs now every now and again, and I even have plans to start a podcast later on. I really like the site now, and great thanks to Kristen for all her help. Thank you so much!

Where do I Start?

Tokeli and our band are laying down the tracks at Spragueland for what will be our first full length album. We’ll be doing some of the songs with our band, and others with various San Diego heavys (including Peter Sprague, Gilbert Castellanos, Bob Magnusson, and Duncan Moore). The line-up looks like this:

Spragueland Demo Cuts Now Up

If you go to the listening page, you will find a link at the top of the page. Click on it, and you’ll be taken to a page where you can hear demo cuts from the upcoming album “Where do You Start?,” that I’m currently recording with singer Tokeli. Some of the cuts feature Peter Sprague on guitars, and all of the tunes were masterfully mastered by him as well. Enjoy, and check back for more updates on the album.

A Little of My Music

“If Every Day Was Like Today” is sung by stylist Tokeli (http://www.tokeli.com), and the song she’s singing is my own composition. We’ve been working together now for over a year, and we’ll be cutting a CD in 2006 with some jazz greats, including Peter Sprague, Bradley Leighton, Bob Magnusson, Duncan Moore, and Gilbert Castellanos. These two recordings were made by Jazz Combo I at SDSU at a live performance during jazz week (Nov. 30, 2005). The band on that date was Peter August (Tenor), JP Reed (Trumpet), Nate Jarrrell (guitar), Wyatt Smith (Bass), Pit Werner (Drums), and myself on piano. Scene, the first recording, was written by Harry Warren, whereas Macaco Pequeno is another of my own compositions.

“Night in Tunisia” and “Footprints” are from a live recording at the Metaphor Cafe in Escondido. The band is Heat Activated Rhythm, with Harrison Kirk on trombone, Christopher Lehnig on sax, Mack Leighton on bass, and Chris Orozco on drums. We started playing together as freshmen at the Coronado School of the Arts, and we’re still doing it, whenever we can get time off from college.

I’m very happy to report that next weekend, Tokeli, the trio, and myself will be stepping into Spragueland and laying down the first few tracks of our upcoming album. We’re even having Peter Sprague himself on one of the cuts. In later months, we’ll be returning to Spragueland, and this time we’ll be enlisting the aid of San Diego’s finest rhythm section, Bob Magnusson and Duncan Moore. More news on this soon to come, along with some new music.

It’s official. My website is now up and running. Still fine tuning it, but its definitely a good start. I’m quite pleased. I’ll be keeping a steady stream of updates flowing into here, like new show dates, recordings, and other important news. Thanks so much for your care and support.

Fresh from IAJE in NYC

I’ve just returned from New York. My friends and I were in town for the 2006 IAJE Convention (International Association for Jazz Educators). For those who don’t know, the annual conference is choc full of clinics on a plethora of jazz/music biz subjects, information on all sorts of jazz-related organizations, and, of course, dozens of concerts by some of the best and biggest names in jazz.

Musicians from far and wide come to conference. It was mesmerizing at times. It’s hard not be in awe when you see Chic Corea, Ron Carter, James Moody, Paquito D’Rivera, John Faddis, Tony Bennett, Jimmy Heath, and Freddie Hubbard all in the room with you. I saw more jazz in four days than I normally do all year, and all of it was world class. I’m finding it impossible to pick favorites, but I loved Monty Alexander (w/ Hassun Shakur on bass and Hernan Riley on drums), The Trondhiem Jazz Orchestra (w/ Chic Corea), Stefan Harris and Blackout, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Rachel Caswell & Geri Allen (w/ Sarah Caswell), and The Kenny Werner Trio (w/ Ari Hoenig). There were some terrifically involving clinics as well, all very enlightening in one way or another.

New York City was equally as incredible, though it probably was the coldest I can ever remember being. The city looked gorgeous from the 86th floor of the Empire State building, and I got to really like riding the F train from Houston St up to Rockefeller Center every morning. On the last night it snowed, and the following morning found us wandering around Central Park on top of a fresh coat of snow.

So much, but I’ll cut myself short. I’m awaiting in great expectation the 2007 IAJE conference, which is also to be held in NYC. They say it only comes once a year…

The Coronado School of the Arts is a public school within the regular Coronado High School (a National Blue Ribbon School) that offers classes specially tailored to the five specific art departments:

The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) offers a unique educational opportunity to students of the arts in grades 9-12. Intense curricula in each department provide advanced-level training for the truly creative student, and local professionals with extensive backgrounds in their respective fields are brought in as faculty.

Don’t live in Coronado? Not an issue if you want to be in the CoSA program. If you or your child is accepted into CoSA, you can easily get an Interdistrict Transfer, especially from North County (I came from Escondido every day).
